General information about Praia
Cabo Verde is known the world over for its morna, a form of folk music usually sung in the Cape Verdean creole, accompanied by clarinet, violin, guitar and cavaquinho. For a great sample, click here.
It is a country of some 10 islands and nearly 600,000 people. Praia is the capital and largest city. In the Plateau, which is Praia’s historic centre, stands the Presidential Palace, the Nossa Senhora da Graça church, the Ethnographic Museum and the monument to Diogo Gomes, the Portuguese navigator and co-discoverer of nearby Santiago island in 1460. That discovery led to the archipelago becoming a Portuguese colony two years later until its independence in 1975.
Cabo Verde, or the Green Cape, is also known for its never-ending white sand dunes, its blue crystal waters and its colourful cuisine.
Spoken language
Cabo Verdean Portuguese is the official language of the country.
Cabo Verdean Creole is the dominant language, with almost all residents speaking it. The language does not have an official designation but is locally referred to as “creole”.
In recent years, English has gained a significant number of speakers in Cabo Verde, the majority of whom are foreign workers. English is also used in several tourist establishments, such as hotels and museums.
