Sofia MOREIRA DE SOUSA has been European Union Ambassador and Head of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Cabo Verde since 2017. Previously, she was Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of South Africa; Senior Adviser to the EU Political Director and Deputy Secretary General dealing with the Islamic Republic of Iran negotiations, the Middle East Peace Process and European Union relations; Deputy Head of Unit in the European External Action Service; Political Counsellor at the EU Delegation to the African Union in Addis Ababa (2009–2011); officer in the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lisbon; Senior Adviser to the EU Special Representative for the Caucasus (2005–2006); and with the EU High Representative Javier Solana (2003–2007). Early in her career, Ms Moreira de Sousa worked in the International Relations Department of the European Space Agency and as Course Director at the European Law Academy in Trier. She studied law in Portugal and holds an LLM in International Law and International Relations from the University of Hamburg in Germany.
